Robert Clayburgh, M.D.
Dr. Robert Clayburgh has been a practicing physician in the area for 20 years. He attended Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and commenced his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the Mayo Clinic. After completing a hand surgery fellowship, Dr. Clayburgh began practice in Grand Forks in 1983. He is board certified in Orthopaedic Surgery with an added certificate for Surgery of the Hand.

Dr. Clayburgh is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, Clinical Orthopaedic Society, Mid-America Orthopaedic Association and the North Dakota Medical Association. He has served as Chief of Staff for Altru Hospital and on the Board of Councilors for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. In addition, Dr. Clayburgh is an Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery at the UND School of Medicine.

Joffrey Thompson, M.D.
Dr. Thompson joined Valley Bone & Joint Clinic in 2001 after completing an orthopedic fellowship in Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy at the Minneapolis Sports Medicine Center where he worked with the team physicians for the Minnesota Vikings, Twins, Wild, Timberwolves, and Lynx, as well as the University of Minnesota. A Grand Forks native, Dr. Thompson received his doctorate of medicine from the Duke University School of Medicine. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. Dr. Thompson specializes in sports medicine and adult reconstruction, as well as providing general orthopedic and fracture care.


David Schall, M.D.
Dr. Schall joined Valley Bone & Joint Clinic in 2002 after completing an orthopedic surgery residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. A native of Grand Forks, Dr. Schall graduated from the University of North Dakota School of Medicine with highest honors. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. Here at Valley Bone & Joint Clinic, Dr. Schall specializes in adult reconstruction and foot and ankle surgery, as well as providing general orthopedic and fracture care.


Edward Adams, M.D.
Dr. Adams has been in practice for more than 15 years. He specializes in sports medicine and orthopedic surgery. Originally from Grand Forks, he attended the University of North Dakota, then completed his orthopedic residency at the University of Minnesota and an orthopedic fellowship at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.


James A. Lessard, M.D.
Having practiced medicine in the Grand Forks region for more than 25 years, Dr. James Lessard specializes in rheumatology and holds certifications in both internal medicine and rheumatology. He is a board certified clinical densitometrist.

Dr. Lessard attended the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfiled, Illinois, completing his residency at the SIU and Affiliated Hospitals. Lessard is now a clinical professor of Internal Medicine at UND’s School of Medicine, where he has taught for nearly 25 years. Dr. Lessard has held many offices in medical organizations and is the recipient of the AMA’s Physician Recognition award, as well as UND Medical Center Rehab Hospital’s Outstanding Rehabilitation Physician award.


Michael Krueger

Michael Kruger, M.D.
Dr. Kruger specializes in sports medicine and is responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of non-operative orthopedic injuries in adults and children related to both sports and industrial activities. Elements of his practice include management of fractures, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis and concussions, along with performance of pre-operative and pre-participation physicals.

Dr. Kruger formerly worked with the University of North Dakota men’s hockey and football teams, as well as the Red River and Central High School boys’ football and hockey teams. A Langdon, North Dakota, native, he earned his doctorate of medicine from the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and completed his residency at Grand Forks Family Medicine in Grand Forks, North Dakota. He is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine in both Family Medicine and Sports Medicine. Dr. Kruger also completed a sports medicine fellowship at Hennepin County Primary Care in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
